Unfulfilled Dynasties: Stockton-Malone’s Jazz Era

In sports we often refer to dynasties – Yankees, Celtics, Lakers, Canadiens – great teams that won repeated championships over a period of time.  The dynasties have earned the praise and adulation that history affords them, but what about the unfulfilled dynasties of great teams who had the misfortune of playing in the era of another great dynasty.

Probably the best examaple of the mini-dynasties would be the Utah Jazz during the Stockon-Malone era. Because they never won a championship, more people remember this”

Yet they were on the the dominant teams of the 1990s and one of two teams to have winning records every season during that decasde.

The combination of Dream Team Members and Hall of Famers Karl Malone (a two-time MVP and second highest scorer in NBA history) and NBA Career Assist Leader John Stockton, plus point guard Jeff Hornacek and unheralded coach Jerry Sloan achieved elite status with

3 60-win seasons over four years

five trips to the conference finals  in six years; and

back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals against Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.

The dynasty wsa chronicled by Michael Lewis in “To the Brink”.
