Tribute to George Scott and the 1971 Red Sox

George Scott RIP

Former Boston Red Sox first baseman and slugger George Scott has died at the age of 69.

From the Boston Globe:

Scott, known as “Boomer,” was signed by the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1962 and made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 1966. He played eight seasons and part of another for the Red Sox, from 1966 to 1971 and again from 1977 to 1979.  He also played for Milwaukee, Kansas City and the New York Yankees.

“. . . Scott had 271 career home runs and was an eight-time Gold Glove winner at first base. He led the American League in home runs in 1975 with 36, and was selected as an All-Star three times.

He won his first Gold Glove and finished 10th in MVP voting as a member of the Red Sox’ Impossible Dream team in 1967 when the team lost the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals.  Scott is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame, and was inducted in 2006.

The 1971 Red Sox

Scott’s passing is significant for me since he was part of the first Red Sox Team that I remember – the 1971 Red Sox.

Scott is the second starter on that team to pass.

Catcher Duane Josephson,  Carlton Fisk’s predecessor, whose career was shortened due to health issues died in 1998.

Nothing makes you feel old than having your boyhood heroes pass away.

So in tribute to Scott and the 1971ers, below is the statistical profile of that team.  Click on the link for the players to get individual stats.

The team finished in third at 85-77, 18 games behind the Baltimore Orioles with their quartet of 20 game winners – Cuellar, Dobson, Palmer and McNally.

The Orioles beat the A’s for the pennant before losing to the Pirates in seven games in the World Series.
