1980’s: Tinseltown Becomes Titletown USA

The 1980’s were a great decade for Los Angeles sports.

Magic and Showtime

The decade began with Rookie Magic Johnson substituting  for Kareem Abdul Jabbar at center to clinch a 4-2 series win against the 76ers.  Magic would bring “Showtime” to the Forum en route to 8 NBA Finals appearances and five championships.

The Los Angeles Miracle

Months after Magic’s rookie heroics, the Dodgers finally beat their nemesis, the New York Yankees in the World Series and would win again in 1988 fueled by Kirk Gibson’s heroic game 1 home run.

Just Win Baby Dude

Al Davis stunned the league when he moved the Raiders from Oakland to Los Angeles and stunned everyone else when the Raiders beat the defending champion Washington Redskin a blowout Super Bowl XVIII that featured Marcus Allen’s 74-yard run.

The Rams made it to two NFC Championship games before getting blown out by eventual Super Bowl winners Chicago and San Francisco.

New Arrivals:  The Great One and the Not So Great One

And just as the decade came to a close, the Kings announced they had signed “the Great One” – Wayne Gretsky who lead the Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup finals.

The other arrival came via the 5 Freeway as the San Diego Clippers moved into the Sports Center and their 1986-87 team is ranked among the worst of all time.

1984 Olympics

On top of it all, there was the 1984 Summer Olympics, which due in large part to the Soviet bloc boycott was a huge success for the home team.
