Send in the Clowns: Patriots Robbed by Picked Up Flag
On the final play of the game in yesterday’s Monday Night Football contest between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers (who met in the Super Bowl years ago), Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady’s pass into the end zone to go to receiver Rob Gronkowsky is picked off but a flag is immediately thrown as Gronkowski was manhandled by Panther Luke Kuechly throughout the play. The flag was then picked up and the referees announced “game over.” I am sure that in some parts of North Carolina Luke Kuechly could be arrested for getting that close to another man. It is clear that Gronkowski stops and tries to pivot to the ball but is completely blocked by Kuechly. T o conclude it is uncatchable because Gronkowski couldn’t get to to because he was being manhandled merely rewards Kuechly for the penalty.
The best and most succinct commentary on the call was offered by Quarterbck Tom Brady.
