Pats in the AFC Championship

With their win last week, the New England Patriots are going to their 10th AFC Championship Game (11th if you include AFL Title Games).   If they win, the Patriots can tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for most AFC Champions at 8.

This will also be the 8th of the Belichick-Brady era – they are 6-2.

MOST APPEARANCES IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Pittsburgh 15
San Francisco 15
Dallas 14
Oakland 11
New England 10
Denver 9
St. Louis Rams 9

PATRIOTS ADVANCE TO THIRD STRAIGHT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The Patriots join the San Francisco 49ers to become the first teams since Philadelphia (2001-04) to go to at least three straight Conference Championships.

KRAFT’S SIX CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE THE MOST OF ANY NFL OWNER IN SUPER BOWL ERA
The 2011 AFC Championship was the sixth conference championship for Robert Kraft as Patriots owner. Kraft is the first NFL owner to bring his team to six Super Bowls and his six conference championships are the most of any NFL owner in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966). Seven NFL owners brought their teams to five Super Bowls, but Kraft is the first NFL owner to lead his team to six Super Bowl appearances.

BELICHICK’S FIVE CONFERENCE TITLES TIED FOR SECOND MOST OF ANY HEAD COACH IN SUPER BOWL ERA
The 2011 AFC Championship was Bill Belichick’s fifth conference championship as a head coach. Belichick’s five conference titles are tied with Tom Landry’s total for the second most in NFL history during the Super Bowl Era (since 1966). The only head coach to bring his team to the Super Bowl more times than Belichick is Don Shula (6).

BRADY’S FIVE CONFERENCE TITLES TIED FOR MOST OF ANY STARTING QUARTERBACK IN SUPER BOWL ERA
The 2011 AFC Championship was Tom Brady’s fifth conference title as a starting quarterback, tying John Elway for the most conference titles in NFL history during the Super Bowl Era (since 1966).

The Pats would not have got the chance to face the Steelers were it not for their dramatic victory in the Snow Bowl against the Oakland Raiders with the controversial “Tuck Rule” play being decisive.

#5 – 2003

Brady v. Manning I – Foxboro

Since both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning play in the AFC, the biggest game they can meet in is the AFC Championship.  In the 2003 season they met in Foxboro and the Patriots defense put Peyton in his place.
