4/8/74 – Baseball Gets a New Home Run King

I still remember watching Monday Night Baseball that night when Hank Aaron hit Home Run 715 to surpass Babe Ruth.  In my book he’s still the Home Run champ.

Interesting side note on the video, a young outfielder jumped up on the wall to try to catch it but couldn’t –it just wasn’t meant to be.  A lesson Bill Buckner would learn again when he scapegoated for the 1986 Red Sox’s World Series collapse.

The Braves celebrated the 20th anniversary in style once again at the Dodgers expense, as Kent Mercker threw a no-hitter in Dodger Stadium.

For tonight’s 40th anniversary, however, the Braves were shutout by the New York Mets.
