April 20, 1986: Michael Jordan Sets Playoff Record in Battle Against Champion Celtic Team

CHAMPION CELTIC TEAM FACES “GOD DISGUISED AS MICHAEL JORDAN”

The 1985-86 Boston Celtics won the franchise’s 16th NBA title – the last of the Bird era.    It is consistently rated as among the best of all time, with only the 1964-65 Bill Russell led Celtics and the 2008 Paul Pierce-Kevin Garnett-Ray Allen Celtics getting similar mention.

The team went 67-15 behind what ESPN calls “the best front court ever assembled” – Bird, Parish, McHale and Walton.   Its home record of 40-1 has never been matched, although several teams have come close with 39-2 records including the 1986-87 Celtics, 1995-96 and 1996-97 Bulls and the 2008-2009 LeBron James led Cavaliers who lost their final home game.

On this day in 1986, they faced the Chicago Bulls in Game 2 of their first found series.  The Celtics had won Game 1 by 19 points, but on this day Michael Jordan almost did the impossible, as he single-handedly pushed the Celtics to two-overtimes on their own court with an NBA record 63 points.  The Celtics won and then closed out the series in Chicago with an 18 point win as part of their 15-3 run towards the Championship.

From NBA.com:

“Michael was doing so much and so well, I found myself just wanting to stop and watch him — and I was playing,” said teammate John Paxson.

“I didn’t think anyone was capable of doing what Michael has done to us,” marveled Celtics ace Larry Bird. “He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today. I think it’s just God disguised as Michael Jordan.”

Jordan broke Los Angeles Laker Elgin Baylor’s record of 61 points in a playoff game which also was against a champion Celtic team.
