Roberto Clemente Would Be 80 Today

Roberto-Clemente-Home-Run0001Roberto Clemente, one of the greatest players of his era (and who is considered by some as the Jackie Robinson of Latinos) would have been 80 today.  Clemente was killed in a plane crash en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.  He had reached the 3,000 hit plateau in his last at bat with the Pirates only a few months earlier.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame shortly after his death becoming the first Latino to make the Hall of Fame.

Clemente is the first Latino player to win a World Series as a starter (1960), to receive a National League MVP Award (1966), and to receive a World Series MVP Award (1971).

Clemente led the Pirates to two World Series titles and was a National League Most Valuable Player once, All-Star twelve times (15 games), batting champion four times, and Gold Glove winner twelve times.

He had a hit in each World Series game he played and his .414 batting average against the Baltimore Orioles and their bullpen of four 20-game winners at the age of 36  in the 1971 World Series is remarkable.  His home run in Game 7 is shown above.  (This was the first World Series I can remember.)

Following his death, Major League Baseball’s Commissioner Award for the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team was renamed the Roberto Clemente Award.
