Mar-2-1962: Wilt Scores 100

On this day in 1962, the Philadelphia Warriors’ hosted the hapless New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  The 4,124 at Hershey Sports Arena saw Wilt Chamberlain do the impossible as he scored 100 points in the Warriors 169-147.

The Bleacher Report has a great article on the comical nature of the game that includes a sorry Knick team whose starting center was too hungover to play, the Warriors purposefully fouling the Knicks to get the ball back quickly to Chamberlain and forsaking open shots to feed the ball to Wilt.

How does it compare to Kobe Bryant’s 81-Point Game

To put this in context, compare it to the next highest point total – Kobe Bryant’s 81-point game in 2006.  Chamberlain shot 63 times, compared to Bryant’s 46.

The Remarkable 1962 Season

Chamberlain led the league in scoring (50.2 PPG) and rebounding (25.7 RPG), but lost out to Bill Russell (18.9 PPG and 23.6 RBG) in MVP voting.   The Warriors also came in second to the Celtics in the standings.

Chamberlain and Russell squared off in one of their many epic battles in the Eastern Conference Finals.  While the Warriors took it to 7-games, the Celtics won Game 7 109-107.  They then beat the Los Angeles Lakers 4-3 in their first ever NBA Finals matchup.

An Unbreakable Record

Chamberlain’s 100 points  is just one of the many Chamberlain records that are likely to stand for a very long long time.  Here is an incomplete list.
