US Has Worst Sports Week in Recent Memory

It is hard to believe that the month that began with both the US Men’s and Women’s National Soccer Teams beating the FIFA #1 ranked team (in both cases it was Germany), the Women winning a record third World Cup championship and both the Men and Women’s National Basketball Teams winning Gold Medals at the World University Games, could end this way.

But from the U.S. Men’s Soccer team failing to defend its CONCACAF Gold Cup Crown to losses to Canada at the Pan-American (“PanAm”) games in Canada in basketball and baseball, it was a tough week for U.S. teams.

SUN JULY 19

USMNT v CANADA
PanAm Games Gold Medal Game

The United States men’s baseball team faced Canada in a rematch of the 2011 PanAm Games in Mexico and literally threw the game away, with Canada winning a second-straight Gold Medal on a wild pitch.  It was the 5th straight Silver Medal for Team USA.

TUES JULY 21

USWNT v CANADA
PanAm Games Gold Medal Game

The U.S. was going for its 8th PanAm Games Gold and last since 2007, against host Canada who had never won the gold.   Nonetheless, Team Canada won 81-73 to claim their first ever Gold Medal.

WED JULY 22

#32 USMNT v #64 JAMAICA
Gold Cup Semifinals

Going into this game, the US Men’s National Soccer Team was:

  • on an 8-game streak in which they were 6-0-2, with wins over #1 Germany, #6 Holland and #23 Mexico and a draw against #11 Switzerland;
  • they were playing in the Gold Cup semifinals after trouncing Cuba 6-0;
  • they were playing Jamaica whom they had a 13-8-1 record against; and
  • on U.S. soil where they had not lost since May 2013.

Nonetheless, the U.S. team was upset 2-1.

FRI JULY 24

USMNT v CANADA
PanAm Games Semifinals

The U.S. has not sent their “A” team to the PanAm games for some time and have not won a gold medal since 1983, with Brazil and Puerto Rico winning five of the last six gold medals.  Nonetheless, they have never ever ever lost to Canada – until Friday night in Toronto.

SAT JULY 25

#32 USMNT v #62 JAMAICA
Gold Cup Bronze Medal Game

After losing to Jamaica, the US faced #62 Panama who, prior to this tournament, it was 11-1-2 against.  Panama scored a draw against Team USA in Group play and then claimed the Bronze Medal after winning a 1-1 game on penalty kicks.
