US Embarrassed by Guatemala
in Low Point of Klinsmann Era
Last night in Guatemala City, #30 USA faced #95 Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier. Guatemela, who has has never qualified for the World Cup, had never beaten the US team in World Cup play and was 3-14-6 overall (but had not won since 1984).
In a performance that has been widely described as a “disaster”, the USMNT was embarrassed by Los Chapines 2-0.
The loss dropped the US to third place in their qualifying group behind:
- Trinidad (2-0-1) – 7 points
- Guatemala (2-1-0) – 6 points
This puts the US in a must-win situation for their remaining games against Guatemala on Tuesday in Columbus and September games against Trinidad and at St. Vincent.
Loss Follows Draw Against Trinidad
In their last qualifying game, the USMNT played to a 0-0 tie against #49 Trinidad.
Including friendly matches, the USMNT has now been shut out in three of its last six games.
The USMNT is 4-4-1 so far in the 2015-2016 season and the Guatemala fiasco has renewed calls for the firing of US coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
