The Great One’s Final Goal
Surpasses Mr. Hockey

gretzky-godOn this day in 1999, Wayne Gretzky scored the final goal of his career in a 3-1 win against the New York Islanders.  It was goal number 1,072 including playoffs and his three years with the WHA.  It was the last record for Gretzky to break.

  • 1987: Broke Jean Beliveau’s record  of 176 playoff points – he finished with 382.
  • 1989: Broke Mike Bossy’s record of 85 playoff goals – he finished with 122.
  • 1990: Broke Gordie Howe’s record of 1850 points – he finished with 2857.
  • 1994: Broke Gordie Howe’s record of 801 goals – he finished with 894.
  • 1999: Broke Gordie Howe’s record of 1,071 goals (NHL and WHA) – he finished with 1,072.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

And Gretzky did it with a great second try, as he drove to the net with a shot against Wade Flaherty. His initial attempt was stopped, but through a scramble in front, Gretzky put the rebound into the net. That ignited a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 18,200 at Madison Square Garden. The fans stayed on their feet for several minutes, applauding the announcement Gretzky had broken the record. Then they broke into chants of “Gretzky, Gretzky.”

Gretzky would play his final game on April 18, 1999, by then he held 61 NHL records.  In his career, Gretzky won:

  • 9 Hart Trophies are league MVP;
  • 10 Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season;
  • 2 Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP;
  • 5 Ted Linsday Awards for MVP (voted by players); and
  • 5 Lady Byng Trophies for sportmanship.

He played in five Stanley Cup finals, winning four with the Edmonton Oilers and losing one with the Los Angeles Kings.  After his retirement, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and the NHL retired his jersey number league-wide (the only player to receive this honor).
