US Women Demand Equal
Pay for Superior Results
Five members of the US Women’s Soccer Team have filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over the disparity in payment for the men’s team (which has never won a World Cup and has not even qualified for the last two Olympics) and the three-time World Cup champion women’s team.
That disparity is not just over wages, as women also complain they are not given the same treatment when it comes to playing conditions. The 2015 Women’s World Cup was played entirely on artificial turf, something that is prohibited for men’s soccer.
The U.S. team has pledged not to play on turf starting in 2016, but was forced to cancel a 2015 game in Honolulu over poor playing conditions at Aloha Stadium.
