USMNT With Statement 4-0 Win Over Costa Rica

The US Men’s National Team opened Copa America Centenario against #3 ranked Colombia in Levi Stadium in Santa Clara.  Colombia dominated the match from the beginning, beating the #31 USA 2-0 and renewing calls for Jürgen Klinsmann’s ouster.

Last night, they faced regional rival #23 Costa Rica and silenced critics with a convincing 4-0 win.  Clint Dempsey opened the scoring on a penalty kick – his 50th for the USMNT (second only to Landon Donovan’s 57).

With the win, the U.S. is now 3-3 against during the Klinsmann era and (excluding friendlies) have not lost to Los Ticos at home in 15 straight matches.

In the World Cup era for U.S. soccer (1990-present), the US has scored 4 goals or more only 37 times over 26 years, but approximately one-third of them have been during Klinsmann’s reign – including three this year.  Is a more explosive play the new look of U.S. soccer?

The U.S. faces #44 Paraguay (0-1-1) on Saturday in Philadelphia which lost to Colombia 2-1 and tied Costa Rica 0-0.  In their last two matches, the USMNT

  • lost to Paraguay 1-0 in a 2011 friendly in Nashville; and
  • lost to Paraguay 3-1 in group play during the 2007 Copa America in Venezuela.
